Healthcare planning software based on Artificial Intelligence

The demand for care is increasing worldwide. This increase makes it important to keep ensuring the quality, accessibility, efficiency, and affordability of care. A hugely important process that plays a role within these four pillars is healthcare planning. Efficient planning of healthcare can help to make the increase in the volume of care bearable, as this growth can no longer be ignored.

Since April 2022, MedScaler has now been conducting research for the company SurgiQ for several months. They have developed planning software for healthcare organizations based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The software is already introduced to the Dutch healthcare market and multiple care professionals had positive feedback on the possible improvements that AI can bring to the planning processes in their organizations.

In this article, we want to tell you more about this promising innovation and therefore we interviewed Junior Health Innovator and project leader Guus from our MedScaler team.

Guus, tell us, what does SurgiQ offer?

SurgiQ developed software that can solve multiple inefficiencies in planning processes. It is a cloud-based software that can be directly integrated with the EMR systems that healthcare organizations currently use. It extracts the required data from the EMR system and links it to the availability of staff and the organization’s capacity. The AI software uses this data to produce an optimal schedule. In this way, long and complex care paths with many variables can be planned more efficiently.

Interesting! But does it improve patients’ health or healthcare?

The AI software can add the most value to the planning of multidisciplinary care paths. Within certain healthcare organizations such as hospitals or rehabilitation centers, some patients require different professionals across different departments for care. The planning of these patients requires horizontal communication between departments, which leads to manual planning. Manual planning of this kind of complex care often causes inefficiencies. AI can solve these inefficiencies by reducing horizontal communication. The reduction of planning errors leads to better quality, accessibility, efficiency, and affordability of care.

What is the story behind the innovation?

SurgiQ developed the software because of the lack of efficient planning in the operating theatres of hospitals. After seeing these inefficiencies, SurgiQ noticed that there was often a lot of time to be gained within healthcare organizations after the operation. The bedside and aftercare were often not linked to the patient’s pre-surgery care path. This was the reason for SurgiQ to develop software that could solve this. Therefore, the software is very interesting for healthcare organizations with long care paths that contain several variables.
